What is the difference between JavaScript and Java?

A common mistake is to confuse Java and JavaScript as they have similar names. However, they are actually two very different languages. Java is a much more powerful language, and is often used to create very complex pieces of software.

Java used to be quite popular for use on the web in the early days, but the popularity of the easier-to-use Macromedia/Adobe Flash in creating similar applications and the fact that people had to download and run a plugin to get Java applications to work means that it is now rare to see Java used on websites.

What is JQuery?

JQuery is a library of common JavaScript functions. This means that if JQuery is first installed on a site, the JavaScript programmer can then create quite complex features using far less code, as JQuery already contains the necessary code for a lot of commonly used functionality.

For a JavaScript programmer, JQuery is a very handy timesaver.
